As thought so by everybody, the Akshay Kumar-Sonakshi Sinha starrer Joker turned out to be the fiasco of the year at the box-office. Barely had it managed a descent opening when bad word of mouth set it back for good.
Trade analyst and film critic Taran Adarsh said, “Joker is a major disappointment. The film started slowly and showed no major growth throughout the weekend. It collected approximately Rs. 15.50 cr to 15.75 cr nett in the first weekend. Breakup:- Fri 5 cr, Sat 4.75 cr, Sun 5.75 cr to 6 cr. Ramgopal Varma Ki Aag and Joker both released in August. Strange coincidence!”.
Film critic and trade expert Komal Nahta said that pan India the film's first show remained ‘house full’ at most places, "But shockingly, as shows followed, the occupancy fell big time due to bad word of mouth.” He said the short duration of the film was another reason for its debacle. “Audiences didn’t find the film paisa vasool. In fact, despite the presence of Akshay and Sonakshi who gave a blockbuster like Rowdy Rathore, Joker failed to impress due to its bogus subject.” However, there may still be hope for Joker as there are no other big releases this week.
Trade guru Vikas Mohan of Super Cinema said, “One could already guess the fate of the film considering the disinterest of the hero. What further added to its downfall was UTV Motion Pictures backing out. When makers are not confident about the film and there is a half-hearted attempt to present it, nothing can save the film. More than confidence, it is the confusion and vague execution which has turned out to be dangerous for Joker.”
Film critic and trade expert Vinod Mirani agreed with Vikas and said, “Lack of promotion is one of the main factors. Also, Joker leads nowhere. It fails to fall under any particular genre which is another drawback. While Joker struggles to survive with barely 14.75 crores - the weekend figures, Ek Tha Tiger has touched upon 191.34 crores till last Sunday.”
Trade analyst Kumar Mohan compared Joker with Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi and said, “There was huge competition between Joker and Shirin Farhad…about which will be the worst film! Well, Joker is a disaster with barely 11-12 crores of business which usually a film does on its first day.”
